Highly rated class of 2012 wing forward JP Tokoto held an open gym session on Tuesday night. Duke coaches attended the session, as did UNC’s Roy Williams, Kentucky’s John Calipari, Michigan State’s Tom Izzo, and Illinois’ Bruce Weber.
It’s a busy time of year for college and high school basketball players alike. At the college level teams are looking to qualify for the postseason while at the high school level playoffs are already underway. For many top recruits and prospects schedules are changing on a daily basis depending on the performance of their teams in state championship tournaments. Unfortunately for college basketball fans, this often means that prospects have to cancel visits to schools that are recruiting them.
Duke is one school that is not immune to the above problem. Duke has invited several top prospects from the classes of 2010, 2011, and 2012 to attend the upcoming game between the Blue Devils and the archrival North Carolina Tar Heels.
One prospect invited to the game is class of 2012 forward JP Tokoto. Unfortunately, Tokoto recently found out that his high school team has a playoff game the same day as the Duke-UNC matchup. Luckily for Duke, Tokoto’s game is early in the day and the Tokoto family is looking into flights down to Durham as JP has expressed an interest in seeing the Duke-UNC game in person if possible. Although this is a good sign for Duke, there is still no guarantee that the Tokoto family will be able to work out the logistics.
Austin Rivers, Duke’s top target for the class of 2011 also has a potential conflict. Rivers indicated some time ago that he planned to attend this years Duke-UNC game at Cameron Indoor. However, his high school team is widely regarded as one of the top teams in Florida and is expected to make the state finals. If Austin’s team makes the final game, Rivers will be on the court just a few hours before the Duke-North Carolina matchup tips off. If this scenario plays out, then Rivers may be unable to make the trip up to Durham.
Despite these potential scheduling conflicts several other top prospects are expected to be at the game.
Several Duke Basketball recruits and prospects from the classes of 2010, 2011, and 2012 are expected to attend the upcoming Duke vs. UNC game. Here is an overview of the players who may be at the matchup.
Kyrie Irving – Confirmed
Tyler Thornton – Confirmed
Josh Hairston – Confirmed
Austin Rivers – Confirmed (State title game may prevent attendance)
Marshall Plumlee – Expected to attend
Quincy Miller – Expected to attend
Michael Gbinije – Invited, attendance not confirmed
Shabazz Muhammad – Confirmed
Justin Anderson – Invited, attendance not confirmed
JP Tokoto – Invited, attendance not confirmed
The annual Duke – North Carolina game at Cameron Indoor Stadium continues to be a favorite stop for top recruits and prospects. Let’s hope this years matchup between the Blue Devils and the Tar Heels does not disappoint those in attendance.
